So I wanted for the space under our stairs to be more useful and a little bit pleasant to look at. And also the missus is always complaining of lack of storage area for her purchases of dining utensils and other loose items in the house.
The stairs is part of the house which was a bit left off during the construction. According to the original plan, it is supposed to be maids room. But seeing how cramp the space is, I don't think it is suitable for human habitation. So I decided that it will not be occupied by any human being but instead will be designate just for storage and other items.
Since my work let me took off for at least 15 days, it was the perfect time for me to finish what I have planned for. That is doing the dry bar and display cabinet under the stairs. Well technically not under the stairs since it is planned for another project which I think would warrant another posts, but it is adjacent to the space under the stairs.
I mainly used 3/4 plywood available in our location and a 2x4 pinewood which I have glued together to make a wooden countertop. I decided to go for a shaker style look using cheap jointed radiata pine wood for the rails and stiles while 3/8 acrylic glass was used for the panels of the upper display cabinet and 1/4 plywood for the lower cabinet doors.
It took me around 4 days to finish the project with a lot of breaks in between since I don't own yet a workshop and rains always gets in my way.
Before starting the project, I had to make the plans first in Sketchup to make sure of my dimensions. The Sketchup drawings also gives me perspective on the look of the project against the existing structure of the stairs.
To avoid any wastage in my project I used the free version of cutlist optimizer. It is a web based application which is a great help for DIYers and probably professional contractors. It automatically gives you the visual on how you can optimize cutting your base materials and gives you exact computation of amount of materials you can use for a project.
